How to Make Cut Flowers Last

There's nothing quite like bringing home a fresh bouquet of locally grown flowers. With just a little care, you can enjoy those blooms for a week - or even much longer.

Here are a few simple tips that make a big difference:

✂️ Start with a Fresh Cut

Trim about an inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle before placing your flowers in water. This helps the stems absorb water more easily.

💧 Use Clean Water and a Clean Vase

Bacteria are one of the biggest reasons flowers fade quickly. Wash your vase thoroughly before using it and fill it with fresh, cool water.

🍃 Remove Leaves Below the Water Line

Leaves sitting in water quickly decay and encourage bacterial growth. Remove any foliage that will be submerged.

🌸 Change the Water Every Two Days

Fresh water keeps flowers hydrated and healthy. Give the stems a quick trim each time you refresh the water.

☀️ Keep Flowers Cool

Place your bouquet away from direct sunlight, heating vents, televisions, and ripening fruit. Fruit releases ethylene gas, which causes flowers to age more quickly.

🌼 Remove Aging Blooms

As individual flowers begin to fade, remove them from the arrangement. This helps keep the bouquet looking beautiful while allowing the remaining flowers to shine.

Enjoy Every Stage

One of the wonderful things about locally grown flowers is that many continue to open after you bring them home. Dahlias become fuller, celosia develops even richer color, and sunflowers slowly unfurl their cheerful faces.

A bouquet isn't meant to stay exactly the same. It evolves over time, revealing new beauty each day.

With a little care, your flowers can continue bringing joy to your home long after the day you picked them up.

Happy arranging!
