If you’ve ever started seeds in plastic trays and felt frustrated by tangled roots, flimsy seedlings, or stacks of empty pots headed for the landfill — there is a better way.
It’s called soil blocking, and once you try it, you may never go back.
At Serenity Hill Flower Farm, soil blocking has become one of our favorite ways to start strong, healthy seedlings — and we’re excited to teach you how.

What Is Soil Blocking?
Soil blocking is a seed-starting method that eliminates plastic pots entirely. Instead of filling trays with containers, you use a soil blocker tool to compress a special seed-starting mix into firm cubes of soil.
Each cube becomes its own little growing chamber.
Seeds are placed directly into the block, and as they grow, their roots naturally air-prune when they reach the edge. This encourages a dense, fibrous root system instead of the circling, root-bound pattern common in plastic cells.
The result?
Stronger plants. Healthier transplants. Less waste.

Why Soil Blocking Matters
1. Stronger Roots
When roots hit air, they stop growing outward and branch instead. This creates sturdy, resilient plants that establish quickly in the garden.
2. No Plastic Waste
Traditional seed starting often means stacks of plastic trays and cells. Soil blocking removes that entirely — a small shift that makes a big environmental difference.
3. Healthier Seedlings
Because blocks drain well and encourage airflow, seedlings are less prone to damping off and transplant shock.
4. Farm-Scale & Home-Garden Friendly
We use soil blocking here on the farm for flowers and herbs — but it’s just as effective on your kitchen table or greenhouse bench.
It’s simple. It’s efficient. And it’s incredibly satisfying.
Why We Use Soil Blocking at Serenity Hill Flower Farm
As a regenerative flower farm committed to growing sustainably, soil blocking aligns beautifully with our mission.
We believe in:
Reducing plastic use
Building healthy root systems
Supporting soil health from the very beginning
There’s something powerful about holding a tiny compressed cube of soil in your hand and knowing life is about to begin there.
And when you see those first green sprouts rise from the block? Pure joy.
